Sci-fi fans made their way to the annual Armageddon Expo held at the Aotea Square this Labour weekend.

It was bigger and better as there were many special guests such as, Chris Judge (Stargate SG1), WWE Superstars Rob Van Dam and Christy Hemme, Ellen Muth (Dead like me), Billy West (Futurama) and many more.

Freaks and geeks turned up dressed in their favourite characters from various sci-fiction and cartoon shows. Read more

Tango gone wrong

When you think of tango dancing you imagine Spanish men in tight fitting outfits sharing a passionate embrace with a dark seductress.

This is not what I found at The New Zealand Argentine Tango Championship at the Auckland Town Hall last Friday.

There were no spins, lifts, rock hard bodies or impressive costumes. Just the same seemingly simple steps repeated on stage by a group of mainly mature-aged couples. Read more

Courageous woman speaks Out

A West Auckland woman has spoken out about the taboo issue of sexual abuse, in an effort to bring about support for other survivors.

Kathy Needham, who founded support group Courageous Women in 2005, thinks that sexual abuse should no longer be tolerated in our society, and intends to see that survivors are given the encouragement and help they need.

Kathy is herself a survivor of sexual abuse, and feels the issue should no longer be ignored. Read more

Nomination for Kiwi actress

New Zealand actress Rebecca Trelease has been nominated for the best actress award at the B Movie Film Festival in New York which will be held from the 26th to the 28th of October.

Trelease starred as a lead character in the New Zealand feature film Down by the Riverside, and is the only non-American actress to be nominated in this category.

In the film, Trelease is a history student named Amelia who investigates a string of deaths in an old house. Read more

This Friday DJ Shaveer will be playing his first gig at Coherent on K’Rd, as part of the ‘Dusk’ event.

Supported by a line-up consisting of Grant Marshall, Bevan Keys, The Disko Divas, Sample Gee, and Karn Hall, Shaveer hopes the gig he has funded, organised and publicised himself, will get Coherent packed with as many guys, girls, and smiling faces as possible.

Dove Pink Star Walk

For those of you who don’t know, October is the official month for Breast Cancer Awareness in New Zealand.

To celebrate, the second annual Dove Pink Star Walk was held at the Auckland Domain last Saturday.

The 5km charity walk started at 8pm, and those who took part (including myself) were encouraged to dress up in a creative pink outfit with decorative pink wings. Read more
