In case you have not been following local body politics the race for Auckland mayoralty is currently on.

Not ringing any bells? Well you may have seen Dick Hubbard’s face on a few Auckland buses.

Imagine for a moment that you were a mayoral candidate and you wanted to score points with the average punter (or just votes) what would be a great way to win the crowd over?

Transport, healthcare or education… Of course, provide free live coverage of the biggest rugby event in the world.

Thats right, Auckland City Council is providing free live screening of the Rugby World Cup 2007.

“In the lead up to Auckland being the host city of the next Rugby World Cup in 2011, I hope rugby fans will come and share their love of the game and bring the cup to life on home soil,” says Mr Hubbard.

It’s pure genius if you think about. Three cheers for Hubbard! I mean there is nothing like a little rugby passion to encourage voters to your side of the voting poll.

“I encourage all Aucklanders, whatever team they support, to come and be part of the action,” says Mr Hubbard.

Now I can’t guarantee you will actually be welcome if you support a team other than the All Blacks. But for those of you who are keen to drink beer and rub shoulders with your (perhaps soon to be ex) mayor you can head down to the Marine Events Centre, located at 135 Halsey Street, Viaduct Harbour.

Kicking off with the All Blacks’ quarter final on Sunday, 7 October, the indoor venue will open from 7am on game days, including:

  • Š
    • semi-final one, Sunday, 14 October, kick off 8am
    • semi-final two, Monday, 15 October, kick off 8am
    • bronze play-off, Saturday, 20 October, kick off 8am
    • grand final, Sunday, 21 Sunday, October, kick off 8am.
