The best things in life are free
by Carmen Stella
Being a student often means that you may have more time on your hands than others, but never enough money to do anything.
University timetables don’t often allow convenient times to work, and even for those that are working as part-time employees, the wages are just never enough - especially if you have to buy bus tickets and text books.
“It’s the part of University I hate because I have been broke since I started, I have to save to go and watch one movie,” says University student Emma Rourke.
Our generation has become obsessed with extreme entertainment, which is often more than they can afford. There are however many places inAuckland that can be fun and free substitutes to expensive entertainment.
If you want a nice romantic evening, perhaps with a special someone, why not get some fish and chips and take a drive to the top of One Tree Hill. There are no dinner or movie expenses here and the free Auckland light display is more romantic than any movie could potentially be.
During summer Auckland has a number of parks available where you can go and create your own entertainment. Why not get some friends together for a shared lunch and a game of touch (girls included) at Western Springs.
If it’s raining, however, or you’re well into the winter season do not despair, there are still some options available to you. Have a get-together at one person’s house to play a few games of buzz. This is great fun and keeps the brain working over the Uni holidays.
Students need to think twice before splashing out, often using money they do not have, when a cheaper alternative is right in front of them.
