Going to a cheap nail technician could cause serious health problems.

Acrylic nails are the latest fashion craze but chemicals used by some New Zealand nail technicians have lead to nail loss, respiratory problems and skin irritation.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has warned against the chemical Methyl Methcrylate (MMA) since the 1970’s.

New Zealand lists the chemical on its hazardous chemicals list and is looking to ban the chemical altogether.

The best way to know if your technician is using MMA is to ask to see the container the acrylic has come in, so you can read the ingredients list.

If the price you are paying is especially low then this could be a sign. To use safe adhesive is expensive and if a technician can charge a low price then they may be using MMA.

If the chemical is used then technicians will often wear a mask to protect themselves from inhalation.

MMA is extremely strong so nails can stay on longer than with other adhesives. This can cause problems when it comes to removing nails as the process is often very painful and at times a natural nail have come right off.

Severe side effects could include damage to the nervous system, abnormal liver and kidney functions, and reproductive problems.

If you suspect your technician is using MMA contact the Department of Labour who have been investigating its use in
New Zealand.
