Cheap eats for students
by Veronica Johnston
Auckland is a devilishly difficult place to find good, quality meals at reasonable prices when you’re a student.
Students often struggle to stretch their last few dollars until their next loan or allowance payment. So it’s important that we get value for money when it comes to food.
But luckily there are some great little quality cafes around Auckland. You just have to know where they are.
Breakfast & Lunch
You can’t beat Urban Jungle café in Grey Lynn for a breakfast that could easily double as your lunch. Here you’ll find their “mini urban breakfast” comes with sausages, eggs, mushrooms, toast, and fried potatoes and tomatoes for around $14. Plus the $3 flat whites are always piping hot, too.
Lunch & Dinner
Kardeniz is a tasty little Turkish joint that you’ll find tucked away in Grafton near Auckland hospital. This little byo café serves up delicious plates of rice, freshly sliced purple cabbage, mint lettuce leaves, and carrots with lamb, chicken or beef for about $15. You can’t beat the service, either. The chef is the type of guy who will remember you when you go back.
Kingslands’ Canton café is fairly cheap considering the volume of food you get when you order a dish. Their meals are always served with a continual stream of hot jasmine tea and the fruit slices served at the end are a nice touch. You can take a doggie bag home, too. This café is always packed with people, so try to rock up before the 6pm dinner rush if you haven’t reserved a table.
So next time you’re famished and flushed with a fistful of cash, why not check out these affordable cafes?
