The travel bug

With three long years of struggling through university and a $12,000 student loan to pay off, all that keeps me going is the thought of jet-setting around the world.

It excites me to think of one day leaving this New Zealand lifestyle.

Freeing myself from the ties of everyday life and going to the places I have only ever dreamed of, such as Europe and America.

You may already know in your heart where you always wanted to go, but it is always a smart idea to spend some time researching your destination and finding out about the local customs, seasons, accommodation, food and transport, etc.

Accommodation is cheap around Europe, with backpackers costing on average $25 a night. In America it may be a little more expensive, but still within budget.

But just remember, you do get what you pay for - at these prices expect to share a room with other people who will potentially keep you up all night, and a shabby foam mattress will more than likely be your bed for the night.

If you plan on travelling around places such as Europe, America and China you can usually find great deals when booking trains and buses. Around Europe, the youth rates (under 25) are hundreds of dollars cheaper, but you will be sitting in ‘cattle class’.

Being able to finance the trip is normally a bit of a struggle.

If you do plan on making this a working holiday to finance the trip, finding a job is easy - especially in Europe. If you just want a temporary job for a bit of extra cash, there are usully plenty of pubs and restaurants that are looking for casual staff. Alternatively, you could opt for a spot of fruit picking if you’re that way inclined.

Keeping in touch with friends and family at home is important to many people and is easy to do. With millions of internet cafes located all round the world, communicating with friends and family via email is easy.

Social network websites such as facebook and myspace allow travellers to post blogs about their travels and load photos for their families back home to see.

Travelling is a fabulous way to meet new people, build relationships and make contacts, so make sure you enjoy the social side of globe trotting as well.

Before the responsibilities of a mortgage and children hit, make sure you experience all that you can.

So, pick up the hippy trail, broaden your horizons and get packing!
