Editorial: ASA correct to dismiss complaints against Christmas billboard

editorial-asa-correct-to-dismiss-complaints-against-christmas-billboard

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) last week dismissed complaints against St Matthew-in-the-City’s Christmas billboard. They were right to do so.
The billboard depicted a downcast Joseph lying in bed with Mary, with a caption which read: “Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow.”
Undoubtedly the billboard was offensive to some. The Catholic Church said the [...]

Blog: Who cares about opinion?

If I was told a year ago it took more skill to write a 15-word news story intro than an entire blog post, I would have wet myself with laughter.
Every aspiring hack or wannabe writer has a blog. It’s cool to hate blogs, but I don’t buy into the idea that “all blogs are crap.” [...]

Blog: 3 News Vs Maori TV

Did everyone see the 3 News clip the other week mocking Maori Television and their bid for the rights to air the Rugby World Cup?
Watch it here if you missed out.
There was an honest argument against Te Puni Kokiri wanting to spend $3 million of funding designated for Maori development on the bid.
Some saw this [...]

Blog: Spread the word – Jam is on!

New Zealand musicians.  Check.  Live artists.  Check.  Free Entry.  Check. Crowds of people….umm, pass?
The Devonport Spring Jam was a great idea.  Five local musicians, a couple of artists and some entertaining MC’ing – but hardly anyone knew it was on.
I’d noticed a small article about the event in the North Shore Times Advertiser.  “Sweet”, I [...]

Auckland governance – hear ye, hear ye. Or not.

The proposed restructuring of Auckland’s local government has divided public opinion and sparked a great deal of outcry. Some worry their rural area will become slave to city interests while others fear restructuring is merely the first step towards privatising Auckland’s assets, worth $28 billion. Underlying much resistance is concern over lack of representation in [...]

Bottom line: Asians want to feel protected

The police, the law, the murders, the dairy owners and us Asians.
I’ve been living in New Zealand for the past eight months. Having read the papers about recent crimes, I have wondered if Asians have been targeted because of their ethnicity? And whether calls by recent immigrants for tougher laws are based on personal experiences [...]

Will the 00s have decade defining music?

By Amberleigh Jack
Unlike some women, my maternal instincts aren’t exactly what you’d call strong. If the day does come, however, where I find myself raising a sprog or two, I have definite ideas on how they’ll be brought up.
While moral judgement is commendable, no kid of mine will grow up without a strong sense of [...]

IRD hot under the collar with GST

ird-hot-under-the-collar-with-gst

I occasionally have the pleasure of speaking to people in various public organisations and I generally find them to be mild-mannered, even-tempered individuals who are dedicated to their job.
So I was taken aback when, in a discussion with someone from the IRD – whom I will refer to as Mr Taxman – he started spewing forth [...]

Editorial: The slogans, soundbites and serious stuff.

editorial-the-slogans-soundbites-and-serious-stuff

So this election is all about trust, or is it about a brighter future?
Party slogans are the new detailed policy. “Vote for me” – say the Greens, lest we cast our vote for someone over the age of eight who owns their own shoes. The Act Party is this election’s A-Team as it has “the [...]

How will future generations view President Bush?

how-will-future-generations-view-president-bush

As the curtains are drawn on George W. Bush’s presidency he appears to have cemented a position as the worst president in United States history. But is this fair?
On his watch, New York and Washington were attacked on September 11, 2001, America started two wars, and the current economic woes have many staring down the [...]
