Two win Pasifika media scholarships amid record entries

A Kiribati broadcast journalist now publishing a community newspaper in New Zealand and a Northcote College school leaver have been selected for this year’s AUT University-Pacific Islands Media Association (PIMA) Pasifika communications scholarships.
Taberannang Korauaba, 30, of Warkworth, founding publisher of the Kiribati community newspaper Tematairiki, has been selected on the postgraduate Bachelor of Communication Studies (Honours) programme.
Korauaba was previously a radio journalist and editor with Kiribati’s Broadcasting and Publications Authority (BPA) and involved in press freedom issues. He was also a double major journalism and history-politics graduate of the University of the South Pacific media programme.
Tupouseini Taumoepeau, 18, who has graduated from Northcote College, has been awarded an undergraduate scholarship for the BCS degree and hopes to major in either creative industries or public relations.
She has been active in Tongan community and cultural affairs.
Associate professor David Robie congratulated the scholarship winners and said the scholarship was encouraging more Pasifika people to enter the media industry.
An unprecedented 15 Pacific Islanders with an interest in a media career applied for this year’s scholarships.
AUT University currently has seven students on the Pasifika media scholarships.
The first graduates from the programme emerged last year with one BCS graduate now working with Radio New Zealand, and two masters graduates – one working for Radio Niu FM and the other publishing a Tongan newspaper.
